Most times it’s someone commenting on how they would love to rest but just can’t justify it, or maybe they’re trying to impede on your rest by way of passive guilt. Either way it perpetuates this ongoing ideology in our culture that rest comes secondary to productivity. In healthcare we have another saying;
\n
‘If you don’t find space to rest, your body will do it for you.’
\n

\n
Our bodies are remarkably patient. They’ll whisper before they shout. Maybe it’s a stiff neck after a stressful week, or the headache that shows up every Friday afternoon. Maybe it’s the shoulder that only hurts when you’re trying to relax. For a while, we ignore the whispers because there’s work to do, kids to pick up, groceries to buy, laundry to fold. Life keeps moving. Until one day, the whisper becomes a yell that refuses to be ignored.
\n

\n
Most of the clients we see walk through the door are here dealing with the aches and pains of day to day challenges that have compounded negatively against them. It’s not their fault, not entirely. We’ve been coded by our culture, and given no quarter by a society that perpetuates an ideology centered around a worker bee mentality.
\n

\n
Even the creatures we associate most with tireless work understand the importance of rest. Honeybees have been observed napping inside flower blossoms before making the journey home. They dance to tell one another where food can be found. They form small social circles within the hive. We celebrate them for their productivity, but maybe we’ve been admiring the wrong lesson all along.
\n

\n
The demands of survival are higher now than they have ever been, with more and more people falling behind. The harder you push yourself, the more likely you are to get sick or injured in the process. You’re not just a cog in the corporate machine, you are a human being deserving of care and compassion, not just from others but also from yourself.
\n

\n
One of the first things we notice when someone finally lies down on the table is the exhale. Sometimes it’s audible. Sometimes it’s just their shoulders dropping an inch. We can often tell within minutes who hasn’t truly rested in weeks—not because they’ve told us, but because their nervous system doesn’t quite know how to let go. It isn’t uncommon for someone to apologize for falling asleep during treatment. Please don’t. That’s one of the greatest compliments you can give us. It means, for a little while, your body felt safe enough to stop standing guard.
\n

\n
Our job as healthcare professionals of so many different walks is to offer you the space to rest. That’s partly why Dawnie (Owner/CEO of ADW) has worked so hard to make At Dawn Wellness Center a space for our community that feels like coming home. From the exterior of the building to the team she employs. We are advocates for rest, compassion, care, and rehabilitation. We are the conduits that bridge the gap between being busy and taking a beat so that when you leave you’ll feel both rested and like you’ve accomplished something. Rest isn’t the opposite of productivity; it’s the foundation that makes meaningful work possible.
\n

\n
Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish, it’s preventative healthcare. Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that rest is a reward. Finish your work, then you can rest. Clean the house, then you can rest. Answer the emails, make dinner, get the kids to bed… then maybe you’ve earned an hour to yourself. But what if we’ve had it backwards all along? What if rest isn’t something we earn after giving everything away? What if it’s one of the things that allows us to keep showing up in the first place?
\n

\n
Life probably won’t slow down on its own. There will always be another email to answer, another load of laundry, another obligation waiting around the corner. Rest isn’t about waiting for life to become less busy; it’s about deciding that your wellbeing belongs on today’s to-do list, not next week’s.
\n

\n
Your body has carried you through every deadline, every heartbreak, every celebration, and every ordinary Tuesday. It asks for very little in return. A glass of water. A walk outside. A good night’s sleep. A moment to breathe. An hour on a treatment table where, for once, you don’t have to hold everything together.
\n
Permission to rest was never ours to give. We just hope you’ll finally give it to yourself.
\n"}}},"pageContext":{"slug":"permission-to-rest","prev":null,"next":"nourishment-from-the-inside-out-the-magic-mineral-broth"}},"staticQueryHashes":["1016893659","1246908709","176905449","2731136013","3268185643","3649515864","3875085636","4287085632"]}
